Bruno Jorge
Bruno Jorge (1981) is a Brazilian filmmaker whose work moves between documentary, experimental cinema, visual arts, and ethnography. He studied Social Communication in São Paulo-Brazil, Documentary Filmmaking in Paris-France, and Master in Performing Arts in Liège-Belgium. In 2003, he founded De Bubuia Cine (formerly João de Barro), through which he has independently developed and produced his films. Working outside conventional production structures, he frequently assumes multiple roles, including directing, cinematography, editing, writing, and producing. His films have been presented at major international festivals such as Cannes, IDFA, Rotterdam, Visions du Réel, Biennale, Vancouver International Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand, and he has served as a juror for festivals including IDFA, Moscow International Film Festival and Sheffield DocFest. In 2013, the French Cinémathèque devoted a retrospective to his work. Across his body of work, Bruno explores the boundaries between observation and invention, often questioning the ways cinema can engage with alterity, memory, and forms of coexistence between different worlds. His feature documentaries include "Piripkura" (2017), co-directed with Mariana Oliva and Renata Terra, recipient of the Human Rights Award at IDFA and Best Documentary at Festival do Rio, and "The Invention of the Other" (2022), winner of Best Film at the Brasília Film Festival and Docville, won around 20 prizes around the world and screened at festivals including Viennale, VIFF, Hamburg and Biarritz.
